You’re an original, and SWFT rides empower you to stay true to you. From work to play and anything in between, we want to celebrate the thrill that comes with being unapologetically you. Our newest series, What Moves Us, is a celebration of the creators, doers, movers and shakers that make the SWFT community what it is.
We sat down with talented adventure photographer Charlie Keating to discuss everything from his experience with SWFT's new mountain E-Bike the APEX, to his travels and goals for the future.
We’re huge fans of your work. How did you get started with adventure photography?
I have always been interested in adventuring, camping, moto, e-bikes, skating, etc, but it wasn't until 10 years ago that I picked up a camera to document it all. Once I did, I couldn't get enough of it and went to whatever lengths necessary to get the shot. My brother-in-law is a wedding photographer and taught me all the basics around photography, and then I ran with it.
What inspires you to move? To travel?
New experiences and unexplored places inspire me to get out. The “what’s around the corner” mindset dictates a lot of what I do. I have always loved to experience new places, meet new people, and learn about new cultures.
How does movement and travel inform your creative process?
Travel and Movement are a huge part of my creative process. I get a lot of my inspiration from seeing other places and cultures and just want to share them with other people.
What has been the most successful/interesting project you've done or been a part of and why?
My favorite project I have done so far is a 12-day road trip around Iceland for a few different brands. I was able to take a close friend of mine and explore around the Ring Road living out of the rental van we had and some hostels. We experienced some of the most wild landscapes and rugged places in the world. You can check it out here.
Tell us about your experience with SWFT!
My SWFT bike allows me to experience the landscapes on another level. I am now able to ride and interact with the landscapes and get further into nature than I ever have before. I look to see where any dirt road takes me and allows me to stay active while doing so.
What was your favorite feature about the APEX electric mountain bike?
The best part of the APEX is the full suspension on it. It makes the ride so smooth and lets me rip through trails all over the area. The pedal assist and twist throttle make it so I can work as little or as much as I want and I really enjoy both!
Any fun moments while shooting?
It was super fun getting to capture the Apex with the drone. We were bombing a beautiful ridge in perfect light and made for an amazing time. It seemed all the elements were coming together which is the most fun part of any shoot!
What’s next for you? Any fun upcoming projects we should keep an eye out for?
I am continuing to explore and will be taking my APEX along with me on my upcoming travels. I am excited for trips to Mammoth and Big Bear to see where this bike can take me. I am also working on a big moto trip through some of our local national parks!
